In our climate the backyard is livable twelve months a year, so hardscaping in Ventura County deserves to be built like part of the house. Master Construction designs and builds paver patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and full backyard transformations across the county. Family owned since 1994, our licensed crews (Lic. #1027281) build outdoor spaces that hold their shape and their looks.
Outdoor Rooms, Not Just Surfaces
Great hardscape design thinks in rooms: where you cook, where you gather around fire, where the kids run, and how it all connects. We plan circulation, seating walls, lighting, and shade together so the yard works as one space. Then we build it on properly compacted base with real drainage, because beauty that heaves and puddles is short lived.
Paver work rewards patience in the prep. We excavate to depth, compact base rock in lifts, and screed a thin sand bed rather than a thick one that lets pavers rock. Edges get concrete restraint so the field never spreads. Soldier courses go down first, cuts land at the borders where the eye forgives them, and joints get swept with polymeric sand and misted so weeds and ants stay out. A final compactor pass locks everything in.
Our Hardscaping Process
From bare dirt to finished outdoor living:
- Design. Layout, materials, and 3D visuals of the finished yard.
- Site work. Demo, grading, and drainage planned before anything pretty happens.
- Base preparation. Excavated, filled, and compacted to spec, the step that decides whether pavers stay flat.
- Construction. Pavers, walls, veneer, and features built clean and level.
- Finishing touches. Sand, sealing, lighting, and a final walkthrough at sunset if we can time it right.
Retaining Walls, Fire Features and Outdoor Kitchens
Fire pits, fireplaces, and outdoor kitchens involve gas lines, electrical, and ventilation, which is where being a licensed general contractor matters. We run utilities safely and to code, build structures that handle heat properly, and finish them in stone and stucco that matches your home instead of a kit that fights it.
Local ground rules the design. Much of the county sits on expansive clay that moves seasonally, so paver systems that flex with it often outlast rigid slabs. On hillside lots in Thousand Oaks and Ojai, retaining walls do the real work, and they are engineering projects, not stacked block. A wall holds more than dirt: a driveway, a pool, or a slope above adds surcharge load, and most Ventura County cities require an engineered design and a permit once a wall retains over four feet. We build them on proper footings with gravel and pipe drainage behind the face so water never builds pressure, and we set them before anything decorative goes in. We also take on HOA common areas and commercial courtyards, phased so walkways stay open while we build.
Hardscapes in the city of Ventura usually start with flatwork. Our concrete in Ventura page covers the sand, slopes and salt-air issues that shape those pours.
Yards in the city of Ventura get their own page too: hardscaping in Ventura, from paver patios on sand to hillside terraces.
