Drywall Repairs That Disappear
Anyone can screw a patch over a hole. Making the repair vanish is the hard part. Texture matching is where our finishers earn it: smooth, orange peel, knockdown, or something the original builder invented in 1978, feathered out so the repair blends into the wall. After paint, even you will forget where the damage was.
The patch itself follows a sequence that does not tolerate shortcuts. Edges get cut back to solid material, backing gets added so the patch cannot flex, and seams get paper tape bedded in setting compound, then two topping coats, each one wider than the last. We sand with lights held low across the wall, because raking light finds every ridge a ceiling fixture will find later. Primer goes on before we judge the match, since bare mud lies about the finish.
Our Drywall Process
Clean, fast, and dust controlled from start to finish:
- Assessment. We inspect the damage or scope the new work and check for hidden moisture issues.
- Protection. Floors and furniture get covered, and we contain dust with plastic and negative air where needed.
- Hang and tape. Boards installed tight, seams taped and mudded in proper coats.
- Texture and finish. Texture matched to existing surfaces and sanded ready for primer.
- Cleanup. We leave the room cleaner than most trades found it.

The 1920s bungalows in Ventura and Ojai are lath and plaster, not drywall, so we skim and blend new board into old plaster at a break line instead of pretending they are the same material. Closer to the water, the marine layer keeps garages and additions damp enough that we spec moisture resistant board where it earns its keep. And ADU and garage conversions need Type X fire rated board in specific places, hung and inspected before anything gets textured.
