My retaining wall is leaning. How urgent is it?

More urgent than it looks. Lean means the soil load has beaten the wall's capacity, and wet winters accelerate the process. A wall holding back a slope above a patio, path or structure deserves an assessment now, while replacement can be scheduled rather than forced by a collapse.

Why did the original wall fail?

Almost always drainage. Walls of that era were commonly backfilled without gravel, fabric or a functioning drain, so decades of saturated soil pushed until the wall moved. The replacement gets all three, which is why the new wall outlasts the old one by design rather than luck.

Do I need a permit and an engineer for a new wall?
